The U.S. population is growing older — according to the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of Americans aged 65+ is projected to double by 2060.
To meet the needs of this growing population, we must investigate the root cause of diseases affecting older adults to proactively impact the outcome while expanding the quality and availability of providers. That's why the Bronstein Foundation gifted $2 million to the Indiana University School of Medicine in Evansville to establish an endowed chair in geriatric medicine, considered the first step in the creation of a strong geriatric research and education program in our region.
This gift marked the regional center's first-ever endowed chair, paving the way for other benefactors to provide for additional endowed chairs at the school. Endowed chairs help universities attract and retain top-tier faculty members, said Catherine Zimmermann, director of development and public relations at IU School of Medicine - Evansville. "It really just upgrades the level of faculty support that we can have here in Southern Indiana," Zimmermann said. While researchers traditionally need to apply for grants to fund their work, an endowment provides access to a more consistent and reliable source of funding, which is a key factor in attracting high quality candidates.
The Bronstein Foundation's $2 million gift was generously matched by funds available through the "For All: Indiana University Bicentennial Celebration Campaign", resulting in a $4 million total impact. "This partnership provided a tangible opportunity to shine the light on the imminent need for increased access to higher quality care for seniors, as well as research in areas that impact aging populations, such as Alzheimer's Disease, dementia and mental health," says Dr. Steve Becker, Associate Dean of IUSM. "The Bronstein Foundation's generous gift is the cornerstone that spurred significant state and local philanthropy to get on-board in support of medical education, clinical care and research."
